PANTHERA PARDUS TULLIANA

The Anatolian leopard is a race living in the Middle East and Anatolia. It was considered as a separate leopard species for a long time and was named Panthera Pardus Tulliana.

It is still not certain whether the Anatolian leopard lives in Turkey or not. The type of leopard seen and shot in Turkey is the Persian leopard. Studies are still ongoing and concrete evidence has not been found.

The last known individual was shot in Ankara Beypazarı in 1974.

It was thought to be extinct in Turkey, but in the research article published in May 2021, 3 different photographs taken in 2018 and 2019, which are thought to belong to the same individual, were published with the camera traps set up in Şırnak Cudi Mountain.

THE DEATH ANATOLIAN LEOPARD CUB FOUND IN TUNCELI

On 18 July 2015, the Nature Conservation and National Parks teams were informed about a dead animal that had been in the water for a long time in the Boğalı village of the Boğalı village of the Pülümür district of Tunceli.

In the first examination made by the authorities at the scene, it was stated that the animal in question was from the feline family, when evaluated together with its head, nails, tail structure and body structure.

While the villagers in the vicinity stated that they heard from their elders that the Anatolian leopard existed in the region, the carrion, which is likely to be an Anatolian leopard, was taken from the area to be examined by the Nature Conservation and National Parks Tunceli Branch teams.

Tissue samples were taken to make the necessary determinations and sent to TUBITAK Marmara Research Center for gene detection and DNA analysis.
